The Third Precept of the Church

As we continue our journey through the Precepts of the Church, we’ve already reflected on the importance of Sunday Mass and the gift of Reconciliation. You can revisit these in my pastor’s notes from the last two weeks on the home page of the parish website. This week, we turn to the Third Precept of the Church, which calls us to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, especially during the Easter season.

The Eucharist is the "source and summit" of our Christian life. We often hear this phrase and it’s easy to not let its meaning take root. To say the Eucharist is the "source and summit of Christian spirituality" means that it serves as both the origin and the ultimate goal of our faith. First, it is the source, from which all of Christian life and grace flow. Every aspect of our spiritual life draws strength from the Eucharist. Second, it is the summit - the highest point - toward which all our efforts, prayers, and actions are directed. The Eucharist is not just a part of our spiritual life, but its culmination.

When we receive Christ in Holy Communion, we are not only united to Him, but we grow closer to each other through this reception of His Body and Blood. This precept encourages us to remain spiritually nourished by receiving the Eucharist regularly, though the Church sets a minimum requirement of once per year, typically during Easter. This annual reception is meant to keep us connected to the Paschal Mystery—the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus—and to remind us of the graces we receive through this sacred sacrament.

While once a year is the minimum, we are encouraged to receive the Eucharist as often as possible, provided we are in a state of grace. Remember, if we are conscious of mortal sin, we should go to confession first, as the Eucharist strengthens our soul and deepens our union with Christ.

Let us take this time to reflect on our participation in this great mystery. May our reception of the Eucharist bring us ever closer to Jesus and each other.
